Kaarondinhah - Other Activities

Kayaking, Canoeing & Tubing -

Penn's Creek can offer some great water in the spring and during other high water periods in the summer and fall for Novice and Experienced Kayakers and Canoers alike. Class II and III rapids are present when the water levels are up. A beautiful, scenic, twenty-mile run can be made by launching below Coburn and putting out about a half-mile past the cabin. Stop at Poe Paddy State Park along the way for lunch. Put back in and float downstream another half mile, exit the stream on the left, walk up the bank, through the old railroad tunnel and across the trestle bridge and "go round the horn" again. This section of water can provide some nice bow busters.

Once you have reached the cabin, you could continue several more miles and put out in Weikert or continue on another five miles and put out at Glen Iron.

Tubing is a great activity for families. June through August is the best time for this. Stream levels are usually low and water temperatures are refreshing. The same trip described above could fill the day.

Hiking, Mountain Biking & Cross Country Skiing -

If you enjoy hiking, mountain biking or cross country skiing, Kaarondinhah can provide a gateway for you to enjoy a seemingly endless source of new, forested trails for many days. Take the easy, totally abandoned railroad bed that winds its way up through twenty plus miles of the Penn's Creek Valley. This "path" will, after three miles, take you through a tunnel in the mountain and across a trestle bridge.

Make a right to continue following the railroad bed. You will have to "ford" Penn's to continue several more miles up to another trestle and tunnel before reaching the village of Coburn.

If you were to make a left after the first trestle instead, you could continue on an unimproved road about 1 mile to Poe Paddy State Park. Just before crossing Big Poe (a small stream) take a right and get a serious workout by switch-backing up to the top and out along the top of the mountain several miles to see Penn's Views (several scenic overlooks). Or you can continue on through Poe Paddy and make a right to Poe Valley State Park where you could enjoy a cool, refreshing dip in the lake. Both parks have picnic tables and fire rings and/or grills.

For the more athletic, explore some of the rugged, rewarding sections of the Mid-State Trail. It is accessible within two minutes of pedaling from Kaarondinhah. There are also many, many other paths and old logging trails off of Cherry Run Road and in the surrounding mountains to explore.
